Buying at the auctions
Newport Auctions welcomes everyone who is interested in buying at auction. We positively promote a friendly atmosphere in order to ensure that everyone enjoys their time with us.
However, we appreciate that not everyone is as experienced in auctioneering as we are. If you’re new to auctions, here’s our guide to buying.
Before the auction starts
- Arrive in plenty of time to familiarise yourself. The auction starts at 6pm, so we suggest 4pm
- Purchase a catalogue with our up to date stock list
- Refreshments are available – Why not buy a hot or cold drink, or maybe order something to eat from our "Daily Specials" board from our modern cafe and take your time to look over the lots you're interested in
- Set yourself a limit for bidding on each item;
- Remember that we're members of "NAMA" (National association of Motor Auctions) & we run to their code of practice.
- All vehicles are sold as seen with no warranty so you are more than welcome to bring help along to look over the vehicle prior to bidding;
- All vehicles are Experian pre-checked, without exception. We use Experian to check all vehicles, ensuring that there is no information recorded against any of them, such as outstanding finance, accident damage or anything else that may affect your decision to buy. When you come to pay for your new car, you’ll know its history.
When the bidding is under way
- When you are bidding, aim to be as clear as possible by raising your arm and checking that the auctioneer has seen and acknowledged your bid;
- Bids will usually increase by £50 to £100 on newer cars, and £25 on older models. This means you can easily keep track of the auction and remain within your budget;
- Sellers are allowed to place a reserve price on a vehicle. If it does not meet its reserve, the auctioneer may provisionally sell the vehicle. If you have entered a provisional bid, its success depends upon whether the seller accepts it. Your bid will stand for 24 hours.
Congratulations – you've won
- If you are the highest bidder when the hammer falls, the lot is yours. A cash deposit of 10% (minimum £100) is payable to the rostrum clerk, along with providing your name, address and some photo ID. Vehicle deposit values will be clearly signposted around Newport Auctions' premises;
- A buyers premium fee is payable on top of the sale price. This will cover you if the vehicle is found to be the subject of an undisclosed hire purchase agreement, is an insurance loss or has been flagged as being stolen. If the information that we've received is inaccurate and the vehicle is repossessed, you can receive the purchase price paid in full. The cover is valid for one year from the day of purchase and limited to the purchase price of the vehicle, subject to the transfer of all legal rights to the auctioneer. We regret we cannot refund the buyer's premium to the purchaser. Further details on cover can be found in our terms and conditions.
- The balance on the vehicle must be settled within 48 hours. It can be paid in cash, debit or credit card;
- Remember that we sell hundreds of cars every week, so if you don't get the lot you set your heart on, we are sure to have something in just like it very soon.
